Everest Region Trekking

The Everest Region

Undoubtedly one of the most popular activities in Nepal must be trekking in the Everest region, reaching towards the highest peak in the world at 8848m. Trekkers will be rewarded with panoramic views of the Himalayas including Nuptse, Lothse, Amadablam, and of course Everest itself. But there’s more to this area than just peaks; it’s also rich in Buddhist culture and provides an opportunity to explore Buddhist stupas and monasteries amid bright swirls of colourful prayer flags.

The Trek

Volunteer Society Treks Nepal offers a classic trek through the Sherpa country of Solu-Khumbu toward the clear goal of Mount Everest. The trek is tough but unmatched in the world for its scenery and atmosphere.

Access is by flight to Lukla (2800m) from Kathmandu or local bus/car to Jiri, which takes around ten hours’ drive. Even just reaching the starting point of the trek is an adventure! From Lukla the trail begins with a climb to the famous Sherpa village of Namche Bazaar, before heading on to Tengboche Monastery, dramatically situated in front of Ama-Dablam peak. Next, trekking across glaciers to the foot of Everest will reveal the view of a lifetime to you.

Several itineraries are available for this popular trek, the most popular being the Everest Base Camp and Kalapathar Peak or Gokyo pass options. A basic EBC trek requires 14 days, plus an extra two days for Kalapathar or four days to include both Kalapathar and Gokyo pass. Additionally, if you wish to travel overland to Jiri rather than flying to Lukla, you will need another 2-3 days for this journey.

The highest pass of this trek is 5,546m at Kalapather.
